GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. — Major Biden is perhaps one of the only living beings with that last name that you can't argue politics with.
“No matter where your political views are, we’re having dogs in the White House again,” Amy Stockero with the Humane Society of West Michigan said.
The Humane Society of West Michigan says Major's presence in the White House is good news for rescue dogs everywhere. Major is the first rescue dog to live in the White House.
The Bidens adopted him...but first fostered Major. They fell in love with him and couldn't let him go, a feeling dog-owner Melissa Dredge knows all too well.
She rescued her dog, Mika, two years ago. Mika was just six weeks old and was born at a high-kill shelter in Texas. Now, she calls Melissa "Mom."

“And for how stressful the job must be…just to have a dog…I know how much of a stress reliever having a dog in our house is,” Melissa Dredge said.
But Major also shines a light on an important issue, says Amy Stockero with the Humane Society of West Michigan. Major is a German shepherd, a breed of dog that is often subjected to breed restrictions across the country.
Amy says they currently have a dog at their shelter that someone had to surrender when they moved, because their new home wouldn't allow certain breeds of dogs.
“We actually have a dog right now at the shelter that is a beautiful 10-year-old dog, and the owner, unfortunately, had to move into a place, and they had to surrender it. This dog was so obviously loved. It came with four pages of notes on how this dog likes things," Stockero said.
