GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A man was shot and killed Wednesday night in Grand Rapids, according to police.

Officers were in the area of Hall Street and Kalamazoo Avenue around 8:50 p.m. when they heard the sound of gunfire.

During their search, they found a car that had crashed into a light pole. Inside, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, according to Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Winstrom described him as a young man either in his late teens or early twenties.

"This young man's life was taken. A whole family is going to be grieving," Winstrom said.

Police say it remains unclear whether the victim was shot while driving or if he was attempting to drive himself somewhere after being shot elsewhere.

No suspect information has been released.

"We're trying to piece everything together exactly what happened, whether this was potentially an individual on foot, whether it was a drive-by, a lot of unanswered questions. We're looking for help from the community," Winstrom said.

Winstrom adds that, based on his experience, this appears to be a targeted incident.

This marks Grand Rapids' 13th homicide of 2025 and the latest incident in a recent string of violence in the city.

Tuesday afternoon, there was an exchange of gunfire between officers and an 18-year-old suspect on Adams Street near Blaine Avenue. Tuesday evening, a young man was shot and injured near MLK Jr. Street and Eastern Avenue, according to Winstrom. And last Thursday, and a man was shot and killed on Hollister Avenue near Wealthy Street.

"Talking to some of the neighbors here, they're frustrated, they're scared. I talked to one woman who said she can't believe two days in a row she's heard gunfire and I get it. And we share that same concern," Winstrom said.
