How to help veterans beyond Veterans Day

On Wednesday, the Armed Forces Thanksgiving made a donation to the West Michigan Veterans Coalition for $50,000.

The check will be used to help veterans with things like temporary housing assistance or car repairs.

“The one good thing that I would say about west Michigan, in general, is everyone has always supported the veteran community,” Mike Keast with the West Michigan Veterans Coalition said.

It goes beyond a simple thank-you.

“I have yet to come across someone, who doesn’t have the highest respect for our community,” Keast said.

There's more to be done too. The WMVC is currently looking for five volunteers for a new micro-pilot program they were selected for in a nation-wide search.

Volunteers would give rides to vets. They'd include caregivers and family of veterans in the rides, which isn't common for a lot of organizations.

“It shows the veteran community, that they care. That they’re respected. That we appreciate what they do,” Deb Unseld, Operations Manager for the West Michigan Veterans Coalition said.
