GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Seven children in Grand Rapids have a bed to call their own.
The Hernandez children first became met Pat Newcombe, with Kiwanis International. Through the experience, Newcombe learned the Hernandez's did not have a place to sleep.
"Everybody was effectively sleeping on the floor," said Newcombe. "I said, we got to fix this somehow."
Shortly after, Newcombe connected with Ashley Furniture. Through the company's 'Hope to Dream' program, each child received a bed frame, mattress and sheets for free.
"This one was a big one that I wanted to be apart of," said Chris Fremen, Visual Merchandising Manager with Ashley Furniture. "Especially this time of year, it warms the heart."
Freman and his team made sure everything was set up and every detail taken care of.
"[We're] really excited," said Cynthia Hernandez, one of the seven who received the donation. "We didn't really have beds because my mom couldn't afford to buy some."
Their mother is a single, working mom who many say are deserving of the generous gift.
All the children told FOX 17 they planned on taking a nap immediately after receiving the beds.
Besides Ashley Furniture and Kiwanis, another non-profit called 'In the Image' helped organize the donation. 'In the Image' is a volunteer-run store supplying clothing, housewares & furniture to those in need, free of charge. The store provided blankets for the children and other supplies prior to Friday's delivery.
