Many women are interested in having a more natural birth experience and Spectrum Health has supported expectant mothers with this desire who deliver in their hospitals. The labor and delivery team is proud to offer a new option for a natural childbirth experience with two natural birthing suites at Butterworth Hospital
Carolyn Leja, a certified nurse midwife with the Spectrum Health obstetrics team stopped by Morning Mix to discuss it further.
Leja clarified that having a natural birth is more than choosing not to have an epidural. They take a physiologic approach, using holistic techniques for labor and delivery. Those suitable for natural birth have no pre-existing or pregnancy conditions, completed natural childbirth preparation with provider orientation. Also, they must agree to be transferred to a traditional labor and delivery room if needed.
The natural birthing suites offer a very home-like atmosphere with a queen-size bed, limited medical equipment, a recliner for comfort and lamps for softer lighting. Also, expectant moms can manage comfort with personal music, massage tools or aromatherapy.
