PLAINWELL, Mich. — A crash that left one semi on its side and another jackknifed on the shoulder closed US-131 southbound lanes north of 106th Avenue Wednesday morning.
The mishap took place shortly before 5 a.m. after snow had fallen overnight.
The southbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours, and before the crash was completely cleared, more crashes just south of Martin stopped traffic again around 9 a.m. The snow was expected to continue all day Wednesday.
No one was hurt in the semi crash. The highway was closed shortly after the accident, but the left lane was opened until wreckers could get into position to put the rolled semi onto its wheels.
As snow continued to fall, crashes multiplied as more people got behind the wheel for the morning commute. A rash of crashes broke out in the Zeeland area; western Ottawa County was hard-hit be early snow.
Speeds dropped below 25 miles per hour on most Grand Rapids area freeways between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m.
