GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — For 19 days, starting on Septenber 18 and running until October 6, international artists will converge on Grand Rapids for the 5th annual ArtPrize competition.
Up for grabs, is $560,000, with the public playing a big role in deciding by using mobile devices and the web how that money is divided. Again, $360,000 is distributed while another $200,000 in juried awards is awarded by a group of international art experts.
This year’s competition includes more than 1,500 entries from 47 countries, along with 45 U.S. states and territories.
While some art is displayed outdoors throughout downtown and along the banks of the Grand River (and in the river), The ArtPrize web site is a great source for the location of other venues off of the beaten path. One of those places is the gorgeous Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park. This year’s theme at Meijer Gardens is “Shattered: Contemporary Sculpture in Glass“, which features 24 glass sculptures from 25 artists. These artists are from not only North America, but also Europe and Asia. The great thing about this exhibit is that it will continue until January 5, 2014.
