BELMONT, Mich. — When you walk into the Wolverine Worldwide Family YMCA in Belmont, you are greeted by totes containing brightly colored mats. A sign reads, “READY TO GO! HAITI OR 3RD WORLD COUNTRIES.”
While watching the devastation from the Haiti earthquake unfold, which included people sitting on the muddy ground, Judy Major got the idea to pay it forward using a method that her own grandmother had back in the 40s: make mats using bread wrappers. Only this time, Judy decided that she would collect plastic grocery bags to crochet into rugs.
Judy does not crochet herself, but she says every project needs a leader. The YMCA in Belmont is gracious enough to host a collection site for nicely folding plastic bags and for completed mats. Judy stresses that bags must be folded nicely and not wadded up in order to be used. The group is in need of crocheters, too.
If you would like to donate or crochet, the Wolverine Worldwide Family YMCA is located at 6555 Jupiter Avenue in Belmont.
