ALTO, Mich. — The westbound lanes of I-96 were closed Monday morning due to a number of crashes that occurred within a short period after 10:30 a.m.
A Kent County Sheriff’s Department cruiser also blocked the ramp from M-50/Alden Nash Avenue to westbound I-96.
Michigan State Police troopers handled the crashes, but there were only three troopers to take care of the stricken stretch of highway, according to communications between the troopers and their Lansing-based dispatchers.
The closure begin around 10:45 a.m. and was reopened around 11:35 a.m.
This incident was different from recent pile-ups. The crashes Monday were mostly separate slide-offs and fender benders instead of multiple vehicles plowing into one another.
