STURGIS, Mich. — Geoffery Smith, Director of Public Safety for Sturgis announced Wednesday he is stepping down.
In a public statement, Smith apologizes for the events of August 15th, 2020, saying "I made a mistake, I am human, and accept full responsibility for what I have done. As part of accepting that responsibility, I am stepping aside as Director of Public Safety effective immediately."
Smith was involved in a crash that sent him to the hospital. Alcohol was suspected and he was placed on administrative leave earlier this month.
