Tips for parents teaching special education at home

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, parents have had to also take on the role of teacher. However there may be some extra barriers and challenges for parents who have children in special education programs.

Dr. Sarah Parker, Director of Special Education at Great Lakes Cyber Academy, shares some tips on how to create a better learning environment at home for families with special education children.

Normalcy and routine—Many families have had their lives uprooted due to COVID-19, special education teachers and supporters can help provide a sense of consistency for children.

Authentic relationships—This helps build trust with staff, teachers and families.
