STANTON, Mich. — A woman has been charged with murdering a 1-year-old girl last month.
Kellie Barthel, 36, of Stanton was arraigned today in Montcalam County District Court, according to Andrea Krause, Montcalm County prosecuting attorney.
Barthel is charged with open murder and 1st degree child abuse in the death of Vayda Vazquez. Bond was denied.
Barthel was arrested on April 8, according to Michigan State Police.
Vasquez was found unresponsive on March 2 at around 5:30 a.m. at a babysitter's house in Douglass Township, at W. Stanton Rd. near Hillman Rd.
Lifesaving efforts were attempted but not successful.
Her death was later ruled a homicide by investigators.
Vazquez would have turned 2 this month.
