Sheriff's Office: Man who barricaded inside Plainfield Township home surrendered peacefully

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A man accused in an armed domestic assault was taken into custody after a nearly 8-hour long standoff with law enforcement.

It started with a call to 911 about an assault inside a home on Balsam Avenue near Holtman Drive around 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. The victim in the assault escaped from the home before deputies from the Kent County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene.

The suspect, a 43-year-old man, locked himself inside the home while armed with a gun. For hours the sheriff's office surrounded the home with members of its tactical team, K9 units, drone unit, and negotiators.

Around 1:30 p.m., the sheriff's office posted on social media asking the public to avoid the area.

The sheriff's office said anyone living in the neighborhood should remain in their homes for safety.

Just before 6 p.m. the man surrendered to deputies. He was taken to the Kent County Jail.

The case will be turned over to the Kent County Prosecutor's Office for potential criminal charges, per the sheriff's office.
