COLDWATER, Mich. — State Police say a joint investigation resulted in 3 people being charged with attempting to smuggle contraband into a West Michigan prison.
In February of 2019, corrections officers at the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater found drugs and cell phones hidden inside a package addressed to a prisoner. They contacted the State Police post in Marshall for help looking into who sent the package.
Over the past 23 months, investigators traveled to Detroit, Dearborn, Lansing, Paw Paw, and Indianapolis to collect evidence and track down potential suspects.
Now a 25-year-old man who was incarcerated at Lakeland has been transferred and charged with conspiracy to smuggle contraband into a prison. Two women, one from Dearborn, the other from Detroit, are under arrest on the same charge. The two are being held at the Branch County Jail until they are arraigned.
