FREMONT, Mich. — The Michigan State Police is investigating after an officer-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday evening (Dec. 21) in Fremont.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. in the city of Fremont, as an officer with the town's police department responded to a call of a domestic incident.

Upon arrival, the officer heard what he believed to be the sound of gunshots from inside the residence.

The officer, along with several responding officers, established a perimeter and evacuated neighbors for safety.

The suspect was seen by police leaving the back of the residence with what appeared to be two guns.

That suspect was confronted by a sergeant with the Newaygo County Sheriff's Department, who appeared to level the firearm at the officer. When that happened, the sergeant fired their weapon.

Neither the officer nor the suspect was struck, and the suspect was taken into custody and lodged in the Newaygo County Jail.

At the request of the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Department, the incident is under investigation by the MSP's Sixth District Special Investigation Section.

According to police, this appears to be an isolated domestic incident with no further threat to the public.

The sergeant has been placed on administrative leave, as is custom in officer-involved shootings.

MSP continues to investigate the incident.
