These are times when you see things you thought you’d never see, such as a city that relies on tourism asking tourists to stay away.

But that’s what the City of Holland is doing.

Events for Tulip Time, which usually is held in the first weeks of May, had been canceled for 2020, with the announcement made March 23 .

But the tulips may be too much of a temptation for some people. They were planted well before the pandemic, and they will bloom.

Holland Mayor Nathan Bocks took to video to explain that the city doesn’t have the infrastructure to support crowds this year due to the cancellation.

“Our first responsibility is to keep our residents safe,” said Bock, so he asked people who hoped to visit to stay home.

“We look forward to welcoming visitors back to Holland soon and certainly to enjoy the tulips in 2021,” he said.

Among the complications with this year’s festival canceled, the city does not have restrooms or portable toilets.
