MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. — Police are investigating a fire that an elderly woman was barely able to escape from Saturday in Muskegon Heights.
The fire started Saturday night at a home on 8th Street after police say a 13-year-old boy shot a flare gun through a window and set curtains on fire.
When emergency responders arrived at the home, they rescued the 90-year-old woman and her cat. Officials said if they had been a minute later, she may not have survived.
The woman was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Her cat was also treated.
Investigators don’t believe the boy was trying to set the home on fire.
The home sustained some damage in the fire, but it can be repaired.
