Driver charged in crash that killed postal worker

GUN PLAIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A man accused of causing a crash that killed a U.S. Postal Worker has been charged in connection with her death.

Spencer Baird, 36, was arraigned for a moving violation causing death. The case is being turned over to Allegan County District Court.

The crash happened Jan. 6 on 10th Street south of Carrie Avenue in Gun Plain Township, near Plainwell. Investigators say Baird was driving south on 10th Street when he hit the back of the USPS vehicle 55-year-old Sheila Rackley was delivering mail in.

The impact sent the postal vehicle into the ditch and caused it to catch fire. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alcohol and drugs weren’t considered to be factors in the crash.
