KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office is warning people about a scam where people are being threatened with phone calls to pay fake fines for outstanding warrants.

Authorities say the callers identify themselves as administrators at the sheriff’s office and tell residents they have a warrant for their arrest. The callers then tell people to pay their fines to avoid being arrested by purchasing gift cards.

Anyone who receives such a phone call is advised to hang up or verify the information with the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office at 269-383-8723.

Common indicators of scams are callers giving instructions to purchase gift cards and read the numbers to them.
