KENT COUNTY, Mich. — The Kent County Road Commission has crews working overnight to keep the roads clear for drivers.

We spoke to Jerry Byrne, Director of Maintenance with the Kent County Road Commission about how the department is making sure salt is still effective on slippery roads.

"We are using pure salt on the state truck lines and a mixture of sand salt mix on the primary roads," Byrne said.

The roads are also treated with a liquid calcium chloride mixture to help make the salt last longer as temperatures start to drop and roads start to refreeze.
