COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. — A group of volunteers met Saturday in Kent County to build bunk beds for kids in need.

The organization Sleep in Heavenly peace builds bunk beds for kids who are otherwise homeless or sleeping on the floor or a couch.

It's a national group, but they have a chapter in Cedar Springs that's working to make positive changes in their own backyard.

In Cedar Springs alone 62 families are experiencing homelessness, according to chapter president Sue Thompson. "The one thing this does for these kids is give them a safe space for their personal being," she said. "We provide mattresses, bedding, pillows, everything that is needed that we know these families typically can't afford."

Organizers say the process of making each bed from start to finish takes about one hour.

They estimated they would be able to provide beds for about 40 kids at about $325 a bed.
