EAST GRAND RAPIDS — Police in East Grand Rapids are looking for the driver they believe hit a high schooler on a crosswalk, then sped off Friday morning.

Linda Najar said her daughter, Sarah, a sophomore at EGR High School, was crossing Wealthy and Croswell around 7:20 a.m. as she always does. A driver had stopped to let her cross.

“He looked up, waved her on, and then looked back down at his phone and floored it,” said Linda. “She was hit in the right thigh and her elbow and then landed on her backpack in the middle of the road.”

Then, the driver took off. According to Sarah, the car was a four-door light gray sedan; the driver was a male with dark hair.

She was able to make it to school, where she called Linda. The two went to Helen DeVos Children’s hospital.

“She doesn’t have anything broken, but she’s bruised up pretty good,” said Linda.

For that driver, as police search for them tonight, Linda has a few recommendations for next time.

“Slow down, leave your house 5 minutes early, don’t run late for work, pay attention, put your phone down,” she said. “You could’ve changed my whole life, my family’s future.”
