GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Kent County Recycling Center is closing at 5 p.m. on Friday to limit the staff's exposure to COVID-19.

The center employs about 40 people who handle recyclables throughout the sorting process. Because of the proximity of workstations on the processing line, maintaining six feet of separation between workers isn't posslbe.

Starting at 5 p.m. Friday, the recycling center is closing to all inbound loads and recycling activities. The residential recycling drop-off station at North Kent Recycling & Waste Center will also temporarily close.

All recyclables normally delivered to the facility will have to be held or disposed of with trash.

The South Kent Landfill, Waste-to-Energy Facility and North Kent Transfer Station will remain open.
