Anchorage Marina Residential Condominiums neighbors continued a cherished tradition Friday, placing 300 American flags along Ottawa Beach Road to honor fallen U.S. service members ahead of Memorial Day.
It was started five years ago by Anchorage Marina resident and Vietnam veteran Chuck Dryfhout.
“It was the brainchild of a former president here,” said current board president Brad Glazier. “Chuck Dryfhout was the one that came up with the idea, and I think he purchased the flags.”
The tradition takes place twice a year — before Memorial Day and again ahead of Labor Day. Neighbors gather to position the flags neatly along the sidewalk outside the complex, creating a patriotic pathway for the many visitors heading toward Holland State Park.

“We owe a lot to our veterans, and we want to remember them. The least we can do is honor the fallen and those that have served,” said board secretary John Coulier. "There's a lot of traffic, so a lot of people see it, so we hope they're blessed by it.”
Neighbors say the gesture may be simple, but its message is profound — a visible reminder to those who pass by of the sacrifices made by America’s fallen service members.
