GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — More than 200 Meijer grocery pickup customers received a pleasant surprise last weekend: news that their orders were free and a $50 coupon toward their next order.

The surprise was for customers who ordered through curbside pickup, a news release said Wednesday.

Some of the other surprises the company had included holiday music, bouquets of flowers and team members dressed in holiday attire.

It was the retailer’s way of letting pickup customers know they’re appreciated – especially when the program has seen such an unprecedented increase during the pandemic.

“You have no idea how much this means to us,” said Sarah Swinney, a customer at the Meijer store in McHenry, Ill. “We just had a baby and this help is going to make a big difference for our Thanksgiving holiday. I wish I could hug you.”

A total of 234 stores were selected to have one lucky customer receive their full order for free.

Meijer announced in October that its pickup service would be free for orders of at least $50.
