GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — U.S Secretary of Housing and Urban development Ben Carson visited faith-based organizations in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo on Monday.

Carson visited Mel Trotter in GR and Gospel Ministries in Kalamazoo alongside Congressman Fred Upton.

He praised both organizations’ role in reducing homelessness in the community.

“From volunteering, to staffing homeless shelters to providing resources and skills training, faith-based groups like this one can and are developing real personal relationships with our suffering brothers and sisters,” Carson said.

Earlier this year, the Department of Housing and Urban Development proposed a new rule creating opportunities for faith-based entities to qualify for federal grants.

Both Mel Trotter and Gospel Ministries received funding through the CARES Act to help them during the pandemic.

“HUD looks forward to continuing to empower you to do God’s work, and our country is eager to continue seeing the fruits of your charity,” Carson said.
