GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A West Michigan holiday tradition is just the latest event to change plans in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Organizers for the Grand Rapids Turkey Trot announced Monday that the annual 5k run/walk will be held virtually in 2020.

Participants can run or walk on their only anytime from November 19 through Thanksgiving Day, then submit their race time online. Turkey Trot race bibs, t-shirts, and other supplies will be sent to each person who registers.

Online registration is now open.

The Turkey Trot supports athletic programs in Grand Rapids Public Schools by covering the cost that students would have to pay to play sports. Last year's event raised more than $110,000 thanks to more than 4,000 participants.

“The community support we receive every year is vital to our students and despite the challenges we currently face, it’s important for us to continue to provide opportunities to our students,” said Grand Rapids Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Leadriane Roby.
