98,439 coronavirus cases confirmed in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. — The number of positive cases of the coronavirus in Michigan has increased to 98,439.

The number of cases increased 779 from yesterday, when there were 97,660 statewide cases, according to the Department of Health and Human Services this evening. Yesterday, the state reported 868 new cases.

The state says there have been 6,417 coronavirus deaths in Michigan.

The number of deaths has increased 20 from yesterday, when there were 6,397 statewide deaths. Yesterday, the state reported four new deaths.

Statewide, 72,580 people have recovered from the virus as of Aug. 21. A person is considered "recovered" by the state if they are "30 days out from their onset of illness."

In the U.S., there are 5,755,002 cases, and there have been 177,873 deaths — while 2,020,774 people have recovered, according to the global COVID-19 Dashboard by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
