LANSING, Mich. — The number of positive cases of the coronavirus in Michigan has increased to 45,054.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reported the latest numbers on the coronavirus outbreak this afternoon.

The number of cases has increased 657 from yesterday, when there were 44,397 statewide cases. Yesterday, the state reported 447 new cases.

The state says there have been 4,250 coronavirus deaths in Michigan.

The number of deaths has increased 71 from yesterday, when there were 4,179 statewide deaths. Yesterday, the state reported 44 new deaths.

Statewide, 15,659 people have recovered from the virus as of May 1. A person is considered "recovered" by the state if they are "30 days out from their onset of illness."

In the U.S., there are 1,214,572 cases, and there have been 71,982 deaths — while 189,791 people have recovered, according to the global COVID-19 Dashboard by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
