A fundraiser to bring awareness to homelessness in Barry County

BARRY COUNTY, Mich. — It's called a "Night Without A Bed" and you can raise awareness about the event by using your social media platforms.

It's being put on by Family Promise of Barry County, which opened in April of last year.

The families who have faced homelessness and have gone through the program might surprise you; college educated parents who lost jobs and have fallen on hard times. Teen parents with no education just trying to get by.

The idea here is that you spend one night, tomorrow night, June 27, without a bed so other children won't have to.

Family Promise is asking people to sleep anywhere without a bed; it can be in the car, a tent, your living room floor, a couch.

Then use the hashtag #NightWithoutABed and post a video or photo with a short message to describe your experience.

"I'm really truly hoping that this will create some empathy and awareness that we can help to understand other people a little bit better and walk for one night in their shoes or sleep for one night, you know in their bed or in their situation", said Martha Ports with Family Promise of Barry County.

"So that's kind of the idea behind this and, and it is also a fundraising component. People can kind of raise pledges or raise money as they, as they make awareness about this some people are doing Facebook fundraisers and things like that. But truly at the heart of this. It is about awareness and building empathy," she said.
