It's never too early to start reading with your kids, and Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative is encouraging parents to start reading to their kids as early as possible.

Preschool literacy can be as simple as starting a conversation with your young kids or reading from items you already have in the house.

Or if there aren't any reading materials on hand, tell a story! Oral story telling reinforces culture, literacy, and vocabulary. Giving children a play by play narrative of what you're doing also counts.

ELNC says turning off electronics and turning up the language is a great way to encourage literacy as well. If electronics are involved though, consider playing a book on tape during a car ride.

For people who don't have children, the ELNC is always looking for volunteers to read to the many preschoolers attending their various programs.
