GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Minor League Baseball was officially canceled Tuesday. Wednesday, Whitecaps CEO Joe Chamberlin spoke to media, saying this is a tough reality.
“When my dad founded the white caps in 1994, his vision was to create a franchise and a ballpark that truly became part of this community,” CEO Joe Chamberlin said.
There are other possible plans for Fifth Third Ballpark. Chamberlin says the 70 games they had on the schedule mean they have plenty of room for other events at the diamond,
No official plans are set in stone right now. But they're hopeful they can serve as a spot for the community to gather with appropriate social distancing.
“In light of everything that’s going on, with the coronavirus to important societal issues, I fully understand that baseball isn’t the solution. But having a ballpark and a venue where the community can come together and have some fun…could certainly be meaningful and impactful in our current climate,” Chamberlin said.
