EGELSTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Two people suffered serious burns when a house exploded Tuesday afternoon in Muskegon County.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. at a home on Barnes Road north of Evanston Avenue in Egelston Township, near Ravenna.

The father and son pair were in the basement when the house above them was reduced to nothing more than sticks and smoke. Police tell FOX 17 had they been upstairs at the time, the explosion could have been deadly.

Mary Ann VanBergen, who lives nearby, said she heard a huge explosion and came rushing out of her home.

"All I can say, it's like something that I've never heard before," she said. "... I mean it shook, your whole house shook, and like I said I never heard anything like that in my life."

The cause is still being investigated, but police aren't suspecting a crime. A family member said the propane tank at the home had been filled moments before the explosion.

Roads were closed while this was unfolding, but have since been re-opened.
