GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- If you get the chance, make sure to wish a marine Happy Birthday as the U.S. Marine Corps celebrates 241 years of serving our nation on November 10th.

A group of former marines gathered outside the US Marine Corps Reserve Center in Grand Rapids Thursday morning to celebrate with traditional birthday cake.  In ceremonial fashion, the oldest marine in the company cuts the cake and hands it off to the youngest marine; a sign of passing along knowledge so that marine can rise through the ranks and be a better marine for their fellow brothers and sisters.

The public is always invited to pay their respects at the memorial, located just behind the US Marine Corps Reserve Center, on 1863 Monroe Ave NW, near Riverside Park in Grand Rapids. The center is home to the 1st Battalion 24th Marines Alpha Company.
