CLARE, Mich. (AP) — Police say a 5-year-old boy accidentally shot and wounded himself and a 6-year-old girl after finding a handgun in a van in which they were riding in mid-Michigan.
Police in Clare say the shooting took place Monday and both had what were described as non-life threatening injuries. The shooting happened as the grandmother of one of the children picked them up. The gun was registered to a family member.
The Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant reports the bullet struck the boy in the hand and the other child in the upper thigh. Police say the children were relatives.
The shooting is under investigation. MLive.com reports police say the woman didn’t know that the gun was in the van. The case is expected to be reviewed by prosecutors.
