KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Plans are moving forward on efforts to improve Bronson Park in downtown Kalamazoo.
The Kalamazoo Gazette reports a capital campaign has raised $720,000 of $2.8 million needed for landscaping and infrastructure improvements.
Parks and Recreation Director Sean Fletcher says that once $1 million is raised the campaign will be opened to the public. Construction likely will begin in 2018 at the park, which has served as a public gathering place since the early 1800s.
Improvements include wireless internet access, space for a seasonal ice rink, restoration of a reflecting pool, new tables and benches, landscaping features such as flowerbeds and upgrades to light fixtures and a stage’s sound system.
Additions also will also highlight the culture of the Pottawatomi Indian tribe and mark historic reservation boundaries with educational kiosks.
