ROCKFORD, Mich. — The Kent County Health Department says that a group of Rockford varsity football players affected bya Crypto outbreak were likely exposed at a team retreat in August.

The health department says roughly 30 people suffered from symptoms of gastrointestinal illness.  Six of them were diagnosed with Cryptosporidiosis that was confirmed by lab testing.

“The symptoms of the others are consistent with cryptosporidiosis,” a release from the health department says.

Crypto is a gastrointestinal illness caused by fecal contamination usually found in water.

According to a release, health department officials say those who became sick were likely exposed “during activities at a team campout/retreat that took place August 12 and 13.”

Health department officials say they are confident that the primary exposure to Crypto did not happen on Rockford school property.

The illness outbreak prompted Rockford to forfeit their home opener against Saline.  The team is scheduled to play Friday.
