Teen in critical condition after nearly drowning in Lake Michigan

MUSKEGON, Mich. — A Lansing boy is clinging to life after he nearly drowned Thursday while playing with his family and friends at Pere Marquette Beach.

13-year-old Jamarion Daquan-Lashawn Gomez was airlifted to DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids after the incident.

Jamarion’s uncle, Ismael Gomez, said the teen was enjoying life in the summer days before school begins again.   There were four kids holding onto a boogie board, and the kids would take turns going under and grabbing each other’s legs.

Gomez believes the undertow probably took Jamarion, and he tried to grab onto the other kids’ legs, but they thought he was playing so they didn’t know he needed help.  The kids saw him get pulled into the water but weren’t able to help.

Another beach goer pulled Jamarion to safety.

“He is still in critical and he is holding his own,” Gomez said.  “Two nurses there at the time who immediately started CPR, which is probably what saved him.”
