EAST LANSING, Mich — Farmington Hills Mercy scored five runs in the second inning and held on to beat Mattawan 9-6 in a division one softball state semifinal Thursday at Michigan State University.
Mattawan scored first with RBI’s from Joanna Bartz and Meaghan Markus in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.
Farmington Hills Mercy scored five times in the top of the second, the final three of which came in on bases loaded double off the bat of Cari Padula.
The Wildcats pulled to with 6-5 after 5 innings but but the Marlins added three more in the top of the sixth.
The game was halted for just under an hour because of heavy rain in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
Mackenzie Swinehart led the offensive attack for the Wildcats going 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and driving one in.
Mattawan (32-9) made the schools fifth 5th state semifinal appearance in the last six years.
