DETROIT (AP) — A 13-year-old boy has been charged as a juvenile in the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy in the yard of a vacant home on Detroit’s east side.
Prosecutors say the teenager was charged Wednesday with involuntary manslaughter, careless discharge causing death and using a firearm in commission of a felony in the death of Frederick Austin.
Frederick was shot Tuesday night.
Investigators say the teens and three others were playing in a shed. Authorities say Frederick had a handgun and the 13-year-old boy picked it up and fired it.
The 13-year-old appeared Wednesday in juvenile court and was ordered held on a $50,000 bond pending a June 22 pretrial hearing.
The Associated Press doesn’t typically name juveniles charged with crimes.
Police have not determined who owned the gun.
