May will end on a warm note

WEST MICHIGAN — Believe it or not, May 2016 is running very close to average for this time of year. I know that many people still have that unseasonably chilly weekend at the tail end of Tulip Time in their minds when we set or tied record low maximum temperatures (or record low highs, if you will) and saw a few flakes of snow.

But the stretch of warm weather we’ve experienced lately with five consecutive days of highs in the 80s are bumping the average temperature for the month upward (keep in mind our average high is only 73° at this time of year). Here is where we stand so far through the first 27 days of the month:

Here is a look at some of the highlights of the 5th month of 2016:

That high of 88° on the 25th was just three degrees shy of a record high for the date, and the 87° high we had on the 24th was just two degrees away from a record high. So the unseasonably warm temperatures we’ve had lately are “balancing out” the unseasonably cold stretch of weather we had in the middle of the month.

The warm temperatures are expected to continue right through the last day of the month (which is Tuesday the 31st) with highs generally in the lower 80s and lows in the upper 50s to middle 60s. This means that May of 2016 will actually go in the books as a warmer than average month!

The first few days of June look a bit cooler, but still near to slightly above average for the season.
