Authorities investigating attempted suicide in county jail

Posted

ISABELLA COUNTY, Mich – Authorities in Isabella County say a Grand Rapids man is in critical condition after attempting to take his own life in the Isabella County Jail on Friday.

The Isabella County Sheriff’s Department says corrections officers found 36-year-old Cory Theis unconscious after attempting to hang himself in a shower with a bedsheet.

Staff administered CPR and also attempted to use an AED to resuscitate Theis.  Mobile Medical Response staff along with Mt. Pleasant firefighters arrived at the scene to assist in the response.  Authorities say Theis regained a pulse and started breathing on his own after the continued efforts.

Authorities say his current condition is critical.  Theis remains unconscious.

Theis was being held at the Isabella County Jail on a Michigan Department of Corrections parole detainer while awaiting sentencing on a recent conviction involving several felony charges.  Those charges include home invasion, conspiracy to commit home invasion, breaking and entering, larceny of vehicles and other fraudulent activity.

Michigan State Police is now handling the investigation into Friday’s incident, which is standard operating procedure in cases of this nature.
