UPDATE: All 6 water main breaks have been fixed as of 5:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the City of Grand Rapids. All the affected roadways are re-opened with the exception of Ottawa NW, which is being delayed due to construction. A final round of fixes is expected to be completed by Friday morning.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Several Grand Rapids streets are affected by a series of water main breaks Thursday morning.

The City of Grand Rapids says that there was a momentary pressure surge caused by a malfunctioning valve that didn't open during a pump change.  Operators quickly reversed the procedure, but the surge caused six known breaks.

A 20-inch water main is broken at 50 Ottawa NW.  Six-inch mains are broken at:

  • 948 Fountain NE
  • Wealthy between Ionia and Division
  • Fairmount SE between Wellington and Eastern
  • 1047 Lyon NE
  • 2471 Union NE - between Belknap and Paris

Crews are on the scenes this morning working on repairs.
