IONIA, Mich. – A prison food service employee has been fired and banned from the grounds after allegedly trying to smuggle contraband into the facility Tuesday.
The employee was not arrested and not named. The incident is still under investigation.
Michigan Department of Corrections spokesperson Chris Gautz tells FOX 17 that the inspector at the facility did a good job stopping the man and the contraband from coming into the Ionia Correctional Facility.
The man works for Trinity Food Services, a company hired to provide food services in the facility. They replaced Aramark Correctional Services last year after employees were reported several incidents of inappropriate acts, drug smuggling and poor food conditions.
Gautz tells FOX 17 that there have been 66 “stop orders” with Trinity employees since the state started using the services last year. In comparison, Aramark had 113 stop orders in the same time span a year ago. “Stop orders” are instances where employees are fired and banned from prison property.
