WHITEHALL, Mich. - A beloved family pet is missing, and the circumstances of his departure has left a Whitefall family scratching their heads.

Dexter the Shih Tzu is considered a family member to Greg Chase and Laura Weberg, who are heart-broken that he went missing after leaving the house without his collar.

They said a woman found him and brought him to the Pound Buddies Animal Shelter in Muskegon.  But instead of leaving him with shelter employees, she gave the dog away to an unknown family in the parking lot.

“She went inside and [saw] the other dogs barking and caged up, and she didn’t want to leave the dog," Chase told FOX 17. "I understand where she’s coming from, but I think she made a decision too quick. She at least should have got information from this family [who took the dog].”

An employee with Pound Buddies said the family that left with Dexter didn’t leave a name or number. But Chase and Weberg got in touch with the woman who found Dexter after she responded to their missing dog page on Facebook.

“I was like, 'What?' What just happened? You just gave my dog away to somebody!'” Weberg said. She went on to say that the woman who gave her dog away apologized and is now trying to help get him home. The woman describes the family she gave the dog to as consisting of a man and woman with three boys. They supposedly left the parking lot in a white car.

“He’s missing now and he’s the kind of dog that we’ve taken everywhere with us," said Weberg. "It’s kind of heartbreaking that he’s gone on us all of a sudden because we are used to him being here.”

Until the family hears about Dexter, all they can do is hope and wait for his return. If you have any tips or information about where to find Dexter, the family has provided their phone numbers for you to contact them:
