CASNOVIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Apple Avenue was closed for a couple of hours Monday after a crash involving a semi-truck and a car.

According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Department Dispatch, the crash was reported at about 11:35 a.m. in the area of Apple Avenue and Trent Road.

Three people were injured in the crash.  One person was taken to the hospital by Aero Med and the other two were transported by ambulance.

State Trooper Hugh Welsh told FOX 17 that firemen on the scene had to remove the roof of the car with the jaws of life in order to get the two men in the front seats out of the vehicle. The child who was in a car seat in the back was taken out by a witness at the scene before help arrived.

Officials on the scene believe that the semi driver did everything he could to avoid this accident.

“We believe that the silver Toyota, according to witnesses, was traveling north on Trent Road and did not stop at the stop sign,” explains Trooper Welsh. “They came out in front of the semi. The semi driver saw the vehicle coming in front of him and did everything he could, but couldn’t stop.”

Tyler Colby lives nearby and says this has happened there before. “In the past few years, it’s happened at least three or four times that I can remember, but not this bad.”

Apple Avenue was reopened just after 1:30 p.m.

This is a developing story.  We’ll update it as more information becomes available.
