HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — A slain Virginia state trooper is being remembered as an exceptional officer and a devoted family man.

Thousands of mourners gathered at the Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton Tuesday to celebrate the life of Trooper Chad P. Dermyer.

Cyndi Grace wasDermyer’s partner at the Newport News Police Department. She called him an “exceptional man” with a “megawatt” smile that illuminated every room he was in.
