Trial for man accused in fatal hit and run set for June

MUSKEGON, Mich. – A Muskegon Township man’s trial for a fatal hit and run crash from this past summer has been scheduled.

Ronnie Jo Claflin is charged with a 15-year felony for allegedly hitting and bicyclist Susan Cummings with his vehicle on Fruitvale Road in August 2015.

At an in-chambers hearing Monday between Claflin’s attorney, the Muskegon County Prosecutor and Muskegon County Judge Timothy Hicks, the trial date was set for June 28.  Also, no plea deal was either planned or made.

Muskegon County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Tim Maat tells FOX 17 that his office has asked the judge to not commit to a sentence for Claflin until he has personally heard from Cummings family.

Cummings was hit was taking part in a charity bike ride across Michigan.  She was from Oakland County.

Claflin is free on bond.
