City struggles over whether to buy GM or Ford

BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) — Ford or GM? For a Michigan city in need of new police cars, it’s a very difficult choice.

Four Explorers from Ford Motor would cost 25 percent less than four Tahoes from General Motors. But Bay City has a 33-year-old policy on the books that requires it to buy GM vehicles.

The issue will be discussed at a city commission meeting Monday night.

The Bay City Times says City Manager Rick Finn hopes the commission will change the policy and save money by choosing Ford. Finn says Bay City residents support both companies but saving $37,000 is significant.

Commissioner Ed Clements wants to stick with GM, which has operated a local factory for nearly 100 years. He says Bay City needs to support its largest taxpayer.
