Air park controversy sparks community opposition

Posted

LEIGHTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Concerns over a proposed air park in Allegan County led to a heated discussion at Wednesday's Leighton Township planning commission meeting.

Even though the air park proposal wasn't on the agenda, public comment opened the door for residents to voice their frustrations on what they see as the lack of transparency about the air park plans and not getting answers from officials.

In November, investors proposed to nearly double the size of an existing 1800-foot airstrip off Kalamazoo Avenue. That proposal includes adding 15 homes nearby and a hanger for rental space.

Noise and environmental impact are two of the concerns of the Facebook group Stop the Airpark.

Another concern revolves around the Township Supervisor Steve Deer and his ties to the proposal. Deer is one of the investors, which, according to members of the group, a conflict of interest.

The next meeting about the air park is scheduled for Wednesday, March 9.
